President Xuetao Cao and His Party Visit University of Science and Technology of China for Academic Exchange

On March 27, President Xuetao Cao, went to University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) for academic exchange, together with some staff members of the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Institute of Materia Medica, and some functional departments of CAMS&PUMC. During the visit, the two sides summarized and reinforced ongoing cooperation projects and discussed directions for new cooperation proposals. Present at the meeting were President Lijun Wan, Party Secretary Yi Jiang, Deputy Director Rui Ni of the Postgraduate School, Director Congchao Zhou of the Teaching Affairs Office, and Director Tian Xue of the School of Life Sciences of USTC. USTC Party Secretary Wu Xu attended the welcome ceremony before the meeting.

At the meeting, USTC President Lijun Wan first welcomed the visiting delegation and thanked CAMS&PUMC for the education, training, and support it offered to first class of students from USTC under the joint interdisciplinary talent training program of the two sides over the past year. As President Wan said, both USTC and PUMC have adhered to the principle of small scale and high quality and they shared the same philosophy of education; and this common ground serves as excellent foundation for cooperation between the two. According to the first class of students sent from USTC to PUMC for the joint program, PUMC boasts high professional standards, excellent academic atmosphere, and teachers with a rigorous research style, and this has built the confidence in the cooperation project. Therefore, it was suggested that the two sides should make more efforts to establish the joint training program as a long-lasting system to jointly train talents of the top caliber.

CAMS&PUMC President Xuetao Cao thanked USTC for its effort to support and promote the joint training program. He said that USTC had a full set of disciplines, well-structured faculties, and high-caliber graduates, with particular competitive edges in life sciences, chemistry, physics, and material science, which are highly complementary to PUMC. After signing the cooperation agreement in 2016, the two sides soon launched a joint talent training program in biomedicine to produce more high-end talents in the field, promoting cooperation between the two sides. He hoped that the two sides could build upon previous cooperation, expand the scope of their cooperation, and launch new and constructive projects in the fields of biomedicine talent training, mutual visits of students, etc., making their contribution to the training of top-notch talents of biomedicine.

Afterwards, participants summarized previous cooperation activities and proposed improvements, had in-depth discussions on what to do next, and reached preliminary consensus.

After the meeting, President Xuetao Cao attended a seminar of first-year students at USTC, titled “Science and Society”, giving a lecture to the over 1,800 new students, during which he systematically introduced the history of medical sciences in China and the contributions of CAMS&PUMC. His lecture laid the foundation for raising students’ awareness of interdisciplinary training and continuing the high standards for the joint training program of the two sides.
